BOOK REVIEW: The Caster Chronicles, #2: Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

beautiful darkness

4.5 stars

Synopsis:

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena’s family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan’s eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there’s no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town’s tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

WOW THIS BOOK WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

This is shocking, seeing as though I usually hate the second book in a series.

This book was just really mysterious which I loved!

So there’s this new character Olivia Durand, who is British and amazing. A few times in this book I wanted Ethan to just forget about Lena and be with Liv.

Throughout almost this whole book, Lena has been bothering me, one moment she’s all happy but then she’s running away and It was really frustrating. But after explaining what happened with Macon and everything I understand, I would be the same way too.

We got to see a whole lot more of Ethan’s mom which (I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. OH MY GODS.) is/was the love of Macon’s life Lila Jane Evers Wate (who I may have imagined and Lily Evans Potter because the names are so alike).

*NEW SHIP ALERT*

RIDLINK!

I like how vulnerable Ridley was in this book. After she lost her powers it was like Link had the power. They both like each other but they won’t say it out loud.

I alsooooooo knew that Lena was going to stay with one green eye and one gold.

I think the most surprising thing is when Link was bitten by John, I didn’t expect to see that coming.

I love how Ethan found Lena and she metaphorically/literally brought her home.

It was beautiful, I really did love it.

  1. The mysteries, supernatural happenings, and the ‘dangerous network
of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems’ hinted at in the Synopsis pulled me in and am
looking forward to reading the book. The review is compelling, the choice of words arouses your interest and make you long to grab the book and start reading.
